MWH Constructors Awarded OSHA and Sunshine State Safety Awards For Cape Coral, Florida Projects

Broomfield, Colo., May 13, 2009 – MWH, the wet infrastructure sector leader and global provider of environmental engineering, construction and strategic consulting services, has been honored with two Sunshine State Safety Recognition Awards from the University of South Florida’s SafetyFlorida consultation program for its work on the North Cape Reverse Osmosis Water Treatment Plant (ROWTP) project and the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility (SWWRF). The SWWRF project team was also recognized with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) prestigious Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP).  Both projects are located in Cape Coral, FL and are part of the MWH Cape Coral Facilities Expansion Program (FEP).

The Sunshine State Safety Awards recognize MWH Constructor’s efforts to implement and maintain effective injury and illness prevention programs. OSHA’s SHARP recognizes the team’s commitment to the highest standards of jobsite health and safety, working more than 600 consecutive days without a lost-time accident.

The $93M North Cape RO WTP is an MWH-designed project, and MWH is currently constructing this new 24-mgd brackish-water, reverse osmosis water treatment plant in North Cape Coral under a program management-at-risk contract. The first phase of the project will provide 12-mgd treatment capacity with the additional 12 mgd to be made available in the future with the installation of additional equipment.

Under the City of Cape Coral's FEP, MWH is also leading the design and at risk construction of a 6.6 to 15-mgd expansion at the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility. Additional treatment capacity needed to be added at the SWWRF to accommodate the City’s record growth and corresponding expanded utility service infrastructure.

“To have received not one but three prestigious awards for our safety efforts and commitment on these Cape Coral projects is a great honor,” said Joseph D. Adams, Jr., president of MWH Constructors. “MWH’s work at both of these South Florida projects demonstrates the high standards we set for our safety practices, and these awards recognize our team’s effort in safely building a better world, making safety part of our value system and our highest priority.”

MWH Constructors ranks among the top 10 U.S. contractors in wet infrastructure and is the construction arm of MWH Global, Inc.  MWH Constructors has received numerous safety awards, most recently being named one of the nation’s safest contractors by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC).

The University of South Florida’s SafetyFlorida Consultation Program designed the Sunshine State Safety Recognition Award to recognize employers that demonstrate effective safety and health management systems and proactively work with their employees to improve work practices.  MWH was presented the award for 500,000 construction hours worked at the Southwest Water Reclamation Facility project without a lost time accident, OSHA recordable or a single DART (Days Away, Restricted, or Transferred rate.) during a celebration recognizing workplaces free of OSHA violations or incidents.
